Created by Garrett Johnson, three-gpu-pathtracer addresses the fidelity limitations of traditional browser rasterisers. While standard Three.js render pipelines approximate light bounces and ambient shadows, path tracing calculates light transport physically by simulating ray paths. The library relies on three-mesh-bvh to build spatial hierarchy trees for fast ray-triangle intersections, executing calculations via modern WebGPU compute shaders. Feature coverage is comprehensive: it offers area lights, spot lights, equirectangular camera projection, depth of field, as well as denoising and upscaling passes to mitigate visual noise. Though path tracing remains computationally heavy and hinges on client-side WebGPU support, the project demonstrates strong maturity through robust demos, glTF integration, and consistent automated testing.
