What AARE Does
AARE is an open-source reimplementation of Android Auto's phone-side client written in Kotlin. It communicates with vehicle head units using the Android Auto Projection Protocol (AAP). The smartphone renders the car display directly via a private virtual screen, encodes the feed using hardware H.264, and streams it over USB or wireless connections.
Independence from Google
The core benefit is independence from Google Play Services. AARE acts as its own AndroidX Car App Library host, allowing apps rejected or omitted by Google to appear on the dashboard:
- Navigation: F-Droid builds of apps such as CoMaps and Organic Maps.
- Audio & Media: Any player compatible with
MediaBrowserService or Media3, including Subsonic/Navidrome clients like Tempus.
- Messaging & Voice: Notification reading and parked replies for Signal or WhatsApp, plus car-microphone integration for independent digital assistants such as Lapin.
Current Maturity
AARE remains early-stage software. Core protocol features, sensor passthrough (GPS, speed, vehicle restrictions), cluster turn-by-turn guidance, and input controls work in tests. However, verification has so far been limited to simulated desktop environments and two production cars. The author explicitly advises against relying on it for daily driving without prior testing.
