Vivace: Rust-Based Composer Alternative Claims 5-16x Faster Installs

X postTomas VotrubaNews

Tomas Votruba highlights Vivace, a new Rust-based drop-in replacement for 'composer install'. According to a referenced Reddit post, the tool offers 5 to 16 times faster dependency installation compared to standard Composer.

Key points

  1. Vivace is designed as a drop-in replacement for 'composer install', written in Rust.
  2. Benchmarks cited in the community claim performance improvements between 5x and 16x.
  3. Votruba points out that Composer is frequently the slowest bottleneck in local environments and CI pipelines without doing complex computation.
  4. He compares Vivace's challenge to the status quo to projects like Mago and Bun.

Why it matters

Composer installations are often a major time sink in automated build pipelines. Accelerating this step with compiled, high-performance tooling can directly lower CI runtime and local developer waiting times.

Analysis

Following trends in Python with tools like uv, Rust-based tooling is gradually emerging in PHP via tools such as Mago and now Vivace. While Votruba welcomes disruptions to Composer's speed bottlenecks, community feedback reveals ongoing debate over whether third-party rewrites pose too much risk compared to supporting the established Composer core.

Just thought of Composer in Rust yesterday... Composer being the slowest part of most CIs and local projects, for no reason (no db, no complext math, just download zip files). I'm too slow... 😅 Today, someone made it... 5-16 x faster t.co/EwaQEZri9c

  1. @HugoAlliaume I think that were thoughs most of people when thay saw first version of Mago. It takes courage and balls to challange years of habit and status quo. Looking at Mago now - wow! This is just tip of the iceberg
  2. @agustingomes @HugoAlliaume It must be underdog... look at Bun
  3. @agustingomes Indeed, I recall people talking about Rust since 2014. I was ingorant in those times, but now I see their point.
  4. @christopherowen Same here. It's a matter of force push at a start, with few agents and then good CI setup for the project, so maintenance is peanuts.

  • @HugoAlliaume @VotrubaT In the PHP world we are lucky to have a single solid package manager with years of history, that works pretty well, even if yes, sometimes it's slow. I don't see interest for a vibe-coded project by a random guy, even if faster. Contributing to Composer would have been better
  • @agustingomes @VotrubaT I mean, Rust tooling is becoming quite popular not only in PHP, but also Python, and is getting me curious enough to start learning & contributing to `uv` and `mago` for example.
  • @christopherowen @VotrubaT I would love to speed up deployment pipelines. I hope this takes off.
  • @agustingomes @HugoAlliaume @VotrubaT If the Composer maintainers are open to the idea to eventually migrating the executable to Rust (or another compiled language) would be pretty neat, but I guess it's a decision with its own significant tradeoffs.
  • @Tastaturberuf @VotrubaT I need faster updates not installs 😅
