Architecture and Feature Set
OpenIDEA brings the workflows of JetBrains IntelliJ IDEA into a native desktop application. It implements the familiar IntelliJ keybindings, tool window layout, and global search functionality. Under the hood, the application relies on TypeScript and the Tauri framework paired with a Rust core. It packages an editor, language intelligence, debugger integration via DAP, Git controls, a terminal, and database as well as HTTP inspection tools for over 60 languages across Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Benchmarks and Maturity
A benchmark measuring the loading of the freqtrade repository (~770 files) on Windows 11 shows marked performance differences compared to IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2.3: memory usage dropped from 2,011 MB to 169 MB, and time to ready state decreased from 13.2s to 1.1s. The author explicitly notes that IntelliJ performs deeper Python code analysis, making the respective background workloads non-identical.
With just over 300 GitHub stars, OpenIDEA is an emerging open-source alternative rather than a complete replacement for JetBrains' mature suite, but it provides a very responsive option for performance-conscious developers.
