Problem and Solution
Historically, bringing complex After Effects motion work into web interfaces required painful compromises: rendering heavy GIF or video assets, or tasking engineers with manually reconstructing complex keyframes and vector paths in CSS or canvas. Lottie automates this handover. Designers export their animations directly into lightweight JSON files via the Bodymovin plugin, and the Lottie runtime parses and executes them natively in the browser.
Technology Stack
The web implementation is built in JavaScript and complements official ports for Android, iOS, React Native, and Windows. On the authoring side, the workflow depends on Adobe After Effects (CC 2014 or newer) equipped with the Bodymovin ZXP extension, which requires scripting permissions enabled within After Effects.
Target Audience and Maturity
Lottie-Web is designed for digital product teams, motion designers, and frontend engineers building interactive UI animations. Backed by Airbnb with more than 32,000 GitHub stars, 2,900+ forks, and an MIT licence, the project represents the industry standard for cross-platform vector animation playback.
