Problem and Approach
When exploring unfamiliar codebases, developers often rely on AI tools for high-level summaries. While convenient, this passive memorisation frequently bypasses the core engineering trade-offs behind specific design choices. Created by Eric Jujian Zou, rederive addresses this issue by turning coding assistants into Socratic tutors that deliberately avoid direct answers.
Mechanics and Compatibility
A session is triggered inside an agent via /rederive [repo]. Illustrated using Express.js as an example, the skill prompts the developer to design a request-handling mechanism, introduces incremental constraints, and leads the user to reconstruct architectural solutions such as middleware pipelines entirely from first principles.
The tool relies on Python 3, Git, and Bash. It adheres to the Agent Skills ecosystem specification, allowing automated installation into folders for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Windsurf, Copilot, and around 15 additional coding agents.
Maturity and Audience
With over 300 GitHub stars and broad tooling interoperability, rederive is suited for developers onboarding into complex codebases, students, and engineers looking to strengthen their system design intuition through active problem-solving.
