André Staltz on AI-Assisted UI Design: Claude, Mobbin MCP, and Aggressive Editing

X postAndré StaltzOpinion

André Staltz argues that UI design is 80% solved using a workflow combining Claude Design, a Mobbin MCP server, good taste, and aggressive deletion of unnecessary elements.

Key points

  1. Staltz suggests pairing Claude Design with a Mobbin MCP to benchmark generated interfaces against top examples from Mobbin.
  2. The remaining 20% relies on human skill: focusing on what matters and deleting or hiding the rest.
  3. Techniques for decluttering include showing icons only on hover, using single-purpose screens or dialogues, and relying on expand/collapse patterns.
  4. Staltz views the Mobbin integration as an adverse post-design review rather than copying, while noting that copying successful patterns is standard industry practice.

Why it matters

The workflow illustrates how the Model Context Protocol (MCP) is applied to design processes: AI handles drafting, external repositories provide automated benchmarking, and human intervention centres on selective reduction.

Analysis

Staltz outlines a pragmatic engineering perspective on modern interface creation. Rather than designing from scratch, the system uses generative AI (Claude Design) and benchmark queries via MCP to validate layouts against proven patterns. The critical differentiator remains editorial restraint—knowing what UI elements to hide or delete.

I think UI design is 80% solved with: Claude Design plus Mobbin MCP ("compare your design against top examples found on Mobbin") plus a bit of good taste and aggressive deletes.

  1. @paulkruegel It's a skill, and that's why I don't think UI design is 100% solved. Basically you have to focus on what actually matters, and then delete or hide the rest. A course with @mds can help build that skill
  2. @paulkruegel @mds You can do things like show icons only on hover. Or have different pages/screens/dialogs each dedicated to one thing so you're not exposing everything all at once. Or then using zooming levels, expand/collapse. It's an art
  3. @WebReflection It's adversely reviewing the design after the fact that it was designed it's not copying stuff from Mobbin. Even if it were copying that is totally not a problem because that is how everybody absolutely everybody in this industry operates at the moment by copying designs that

  • @WebReflection @andrestaltz and no credits acknowledged whatsoever after, I suppose, great until Mobbin examples start degrading in quality/innovation? 🤔
  • @shin86dev @andrestaltz “a bit of good taste” is doing herculean labor here
  • @WebReflection @andrestaltz > that is how everybody absolutely everybody in this industry operates at the moment by copying designs that work well that's my whole point around having degrading results in the long term if nobody actually innovates out there 🤷 ... remember the "phone game"? Hi becomes Wut.
  • @HeyLabii @andrestaltz I’d put more weight on the good taste part.
  • @laavanyanegi @andrestaltz close. my take = Figma + Claude design + Paper + Mobbin + taste, agency, presentation

Improving Web Design in Claude Code in Three Steps

Chase AI outlines a three-step workflow to eliminate generic 'AI slop' when designing web interfaces with Claude Code. The method combines a personal design library, specialised CLI tools like Impeccable or the Higgsfield MCP, and an iterative build workflow featuring in-browser tweak bars.
