Prompt Pattern to Expose Model Assumptions in Vibe Coding

X postklössResource

klöss shares a prompt pattern for tools like Claude Code, Codex, and Grok. It instructs the AI to explicitly list all assumptions about a codebase, separating verified facts from guessed deductions.

Key points

  1. The prompt asks the AI to list every assumption it makes regarding the codebase.
  2. Each assumption must be categorised as verified (read directly from code) or guessed (inferred, along with an explanation).
  3. The model is then instructed to provide its highest-confidence surgical fix.
  4. In a follow-up reply, klöss mentions that users can also include an explicit rule against submitting keys and secrets.

Why it matters

During rapid AI-assisted development, silent assumptions frequently introduce regressions. Requiring an assistant to make its reasoning transparent helps developers spot faulty inferences before changes are applied.

Analysis

The proposed technique targets a common failure mode in agentic coding tools: LLMs often assume architectural or implementation details without actually inspecting the source files. Forcing the model to label items as either verified or guessed helps expose blind spots and encourages surgical, low-risk patches. As highlighted in subsequent replies, combining this technique with file-level verification and strict secret management provides a safer foundation when delegating refactoring tasks to LLMs.

If you’re vibe coding with Claude Code, Codex, or Grok, steal this prompt: "List every assumption you're making about this codebase. Mark each one verified (you read the actual code) or guessed (you inferred it, and say why). Propose your highest confidence surgical fix for

  1. @Imrexx_dev You can add a line about keys and secrets too but I also assume most know not to put an API key in chat these days lol. Maybe that’s far fetched.

  • @CodingwithMagic @kloss_xyz Solid. I'd add: "For each guessed assumption, name the file or command that would verify it, and check it before editing." In backend code the wrong guesses are almost always side effects: retries, transactions, cache invalidation. That's where confident fixes break prod.
  • @0xmatti @kloss_xyz thank you
  • @HeyYoGB @kloss_xyz nice work man saving this one
  • @HeyYoGB @kloss_xyz more prompts on the way 👀
  • @Imrexx_dev @kloss_xyz You have to be careful with sensitive information you provide the model. You can't copy copy everything and send
