The Evolving Role of AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md Context Files

X postPostHog

This discussion explores the effectiveness of using context files like AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md to guide AI coding assistants. While some developers find them essential for project-specific instructions, others argue they often become technical debt that grows stale and hinders model performance.

Analysis

The discussion centers on the utility of 'context files' (e.g., AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md) in modern software development workflows involving AI coding agents. The core debate is whether these files act as helpful guides or as bloated configuration files that introduce unnecessary complexity.

Key Perspectives

  • The Case for Minimalism: Some contributors suggest that better models require less scaffolding. As AI models improve, they may need less explicit instruction, and excessive context files can actually degrade performance or lead to unexpected behavior.
  • Technical Debt: Critics argue that these files are essentially configuration files that frequently go stale. If a rule or instruction in these files is not actively preventing a specific failure, it should be deleted to prevent the file from becoming a source of 'technical debt with authority.'
  • Maintenance Challenges: Users report that these files require constant maintenance, with some developers rewriting them every few weeks to keep them relevant to the current project state.
  • Alternative Approaches: Some suggest that project information should be distributed across a wiki rather than dumped into a single, monolithic file, which can become a bottleneck for the AI agent.

Why It Matters

As developers increasingly rely on AI agents for coding tasks, the 'prompt engineering' layer—often represented by these context files—is becoming a critical part of the developer experience. Understanding how to manage this context effectively is essential for maintaining clean, efficient, and reliable AI-assisted workflows.

  • @DharmaSamu @posthog I rewrite CLAUDE.md/ AGENTS.md files every two weeks !
  • @RiverAi7z @posthog The same thing seems to be happening at the tool layer. Claude Code’s latest system prompt no longer exposes TaskCreate / TaskList, while Pi keeps aging surprisingly well with just read / write / edit / bash. Better models seem to need less scaffolding, not more.
  • @starmajdev @posthog Love this, thank you.
  • @rohansharma0509 @posthog Agents.md is the wrong way to give context. You need to spread that information out in a wiki not dump everything in one file. t.co/pJ8NlTogGK
  • @BiosRiosz @posthog "If you can't name the failure it prevents, delete it" is the right test. The limit: delete a line, evals still pass, and you've learned that line did nothing. You haven't learned the file is doing anything. That needs a control. I built one and my file didn't beat it.

Decluttering Your AI Setup: Optimising Claude Code and Codex

Constantly switching between AI environments like Claude Code and OpenAI Codex often leads to accumulated dead skills, outdated memory files, and conflicting instructions that consume context windows. This video presents a structured method to audit past usage, consolidate instructions around AGENTS.md, isolate project contexts, and convert complex tools into lean Markdown playbooks.
