The First TYPO3 Camp London – A Milestone for the Community
On 7 October 2025, the European TYPO3 community gathered in the heart of London for the first TYPO3 Camp London. At the MSQ Partners building on Bow Street, developers, integrators, and experts from across Europe met to exchange experiences, discuss innovations, and strengthen their network.
As a TYPO3 enthusiast and developer, I was there in person – and the trip was well worth it. The personal encounters made this camp unforgettable, alongside the valuable technical insights.

Inspiring Encounters and Technical Discussions
Olivier Dobberkau – Old Acquaintances and Shared Ailments
Meeting Olivier Dobberkau was a pleasure, as always. Olivier is one of those people with whom you discuss much more than just code – although the technical discussions are consistently of the highest calibre.
Dan Frost – The Creator of Objective TypoScript
A highlight was the conversation with Dan Frost, the developer behind Objective TypoScript. The project dates back to 2004 and attempted to integrate object-oriented concepts into TypoScript. The approach was fascinating at the time, but ultimately proved too complex in practice. Nevertheless, it demonstrates the innovative ideas people come up with in the open-source sphere.
Tom Warwick – A Passion for Stable TYPO3 Systems

Tom Warwick at the TYPO3 Camp London 2025
TYPO3 Trainer from South Wales, UK
Tom Warwick lives in South Wales and has been working with TYPO3 since 2008. As an experienced integrator and developer, he has been involved in numerous projects for public and private organisations. Today, he focuses on TYPO3 training and producing video content.
Tom particularly values TYPO3 for its stability and reliability in enterprise environments. In his training sessions, he imparts technical expertise and practical experience gained from years of working on complex TYPO3 installations.
A special thanks goes to Tom for organising the TYPO3 Camp London – an event that brings the community together and fosters collaboration.
Technical Insights and Lessons Learned
Numerous technical discussions provided crucial insights. The main takeaways:
MySQL Clustering – A Critical Review
A recurring topic in the technical sessions was MySQL clustering. The community consensus: avoid it if possible.
In theory, MySQL clustering offers advantages such as high availability, load balancing, and redundancy. In practice, however, the complexity increases exponentially, potential sources of error multiply, and the performance benefits often fall short of expectations.
Conclusion: Invest in intelligent caching, optimised queries, and modern infrastructure – rather than complex clustering setups that create more problems than they solve.
Government Site Builder – €108 Million Budget for TYPO3 Implementations in Germany
In Germany, €108 million has been earmarked for TYPO3 implementations. This figure underscores the importance of TYPO3 in the DACH region – and the sheer scale of the market.
I outlined an alternative vision for Austria in a separate blog post. The core idea: The same TYPO3 foundation, expanded more intelligently.
Key Areas of the Alternative:
- n8n AI Integration: Automated workflows for content creation, translations, and document processing
- Frontend Editing: Intuitive content management directly on the website (via Bakehouse or similar)
- Unified Template System: One design for all administrative levels – from federal ministries down to local municipalities
- Optimised Cost Structure: Lean architectures instead of monolithic legacy systems
Strategic Discussion: Governance and Community Development
Daniel Fau (CEO of TYPO3 GmbH) summed up the central issue perfectly: "Wag the Dog – Who sets the direction?"
A budget of €108 million will inevitably shape TYPO3's development. The crucial question is: What will the collaboration between TYPO3 GmbH, the Government Site Builder project, and the community look like? What development scenarios are conceivable?
The Spelling: It's "TYPO3", not "typo"
A seemingly minor detail with a major impact: The correct spelling is "TYPO3" – entirely in uppercase.
Not "Typo3", not "typo3", not "Typo". TYPO3.
The consistent use of "TYPO3" demonstrates respect for the project and ensures professional communication. It’s a detail – but details make all the difference in a professional community.
This convention applies to:
- Documentation and blog posts
- Marketing materials
- Client communication
- GitHub repositories and package names
Exception: Package names in Composer and Packagist often follow lowercase conventions (typo3/cms-core) – this is a technical requirement and widely accepted.
The TYPO3 Community – More Than Just Code
The TYPO3 Camp London proved one thing: the TYPO3 community is extraordinary. It's not just about code, extensions, and performance benchmarks. It's about people who share a common vision: to build a flexible, secure, and future-proof CMS that will remain relevant for years to come.
Why the TYPO3 Community is Special
Open Source Spirit
TYPO3 thrives on its community. Thousands of developers worldwide contribute to the core, extensions, and documentation. This level of dedication is unique.
Enterprise Focus
TYPO3 is not a hobby project. It is a professional CMS used by large organisations, governments, and corporations – delivering corresponding quality.
Long-Term Vision
Over 25 years of development history, stable LTS versions, and forward-looking roadmaps. TYPO3 thinks in decades, not quarters.
Networking and Knowledge Sharing
The TYPO3 Camp London offered numerous opportunities for networking:
- Formal Sessions: Lectures on technical innovations, best practices, and case studies
- Informal Conversations: The best insights often emerge over a coffee or a pint
- Hands-On Workshops: Practical demos and live coding sessions
- Social Night: A relaxed atmosphere for getting to know each other and networking
Personal Conclusion: The informal chats between sessions were at least as valuable as the formal ones. This is where partnerships, projects, and friendships are forged.
What We Took Away from London
The TYPO3 Camp London was more than just a conference – it was a reminder of why we work with TYPO3:

Acknowledgements
Our thanks go out to the organisers of the TYPO3 Camp London for hosting such a successful event and providing the fantastic venue at the MSQ Partners building.
We would especially like to thank Tom Warwick for his organisational efforts and the stimulating conversations.
Conclusion
The TYPO3 Camp London 2025 was a resounding success. It demonstrated that TYPO3 is not just a CMS – it is a vibrant community, a technological ecosystem, and a vision for the future of the web.
Key takeaways:
- Technical: Avoid unnecessary complexity (MySQL clustering), rely on proven patterns (caching, indexing, modern infrastructure)
- Community: Personal encounters are priceless – conferences like these are investments in relationships, not just knowledge
- Future: TYPO3 continues to evolve – look out for more insights at the TYPO3 Conference. Perhaps we'll see you there.
The TYPO3 Camp London was the first of its kind – but certainly not the last. We look forward to future events, more inspiring encounters, and the continued development of the TYPO3 community.
